I think that you pose an interesting question. I think it could be something like a video store.

Presumably you'd want to be part of any sort of search engine, so you pay to be part of it. This allows them to keep it ad-free. If people would prefer not to pay, then the ad-full engines would thrive, I guess.

I personally see I small advantage of ads in RSS feeds - Based on the number of impressions, I will get an idea of who all have subscribed to my RSS Feed.

Otherwise the RSS file http://labnol.blogspot.com/atom.xml is just a simple file and there is no way to determine who downloads it.
