At least in IE7 it's a cinch to change the default search engine for that search box. In Safari on the Mac, there's no obvious way to change the default search engine, which is set to...guess what...Google.

On point #3, I'd have to say that that is the issue at hand, not just the search box. =)

You might seriously talk to the guy who wrote utorrent. You could use his tiny (and rocking sweet) engine in your app as a dll. There is precedent.
